Description:

IFNl-1 was discovered in 2003. IFNl-1 belongs to the type III subset of IFN family with IL-28A and IL-28B, respectively IFNl2 and IFNl3. The IFNl-1 genes are clustered together on human chromosome 19 and are composed of multiple exons, resembling the structural organization of genes encoding IL-10-related cytokines. The IFNl-1 gene encodes 20 kDa secreted monomeric protein. IFNl-1 plays a role in the antiviral defence, predominantly in the epithelial tissues. It has been described as a therapeutic agent to treat patients with chronic hepatitis C virus by inhibiting B and C hepatitis virus replication.
