Synonyms:
T-cell growth factor p40, P40 cytokine
Description:
Interleukin-9 (IL-9) is a cytokine that acts as a regulator of a variety of hematopoietic cells, and is produced by Th2-type CD4+ T cells. This cytokine stimulates cell proliferation, prevents apoptosis and supports the growth of IL-2- and IL-4-independent helper T-cells. It functions through the IL-9 receptor, which activates different signal transducer and activator (STAT) proteins and thus connects this cytokine to various biological processes. The IL-9 gene has been associated with asthma.
